SnowWhite

Postmarked 2 January 1950

Message:
Hello Doodlebug - / Do you know anyone in Chattanooga who would send you a postcard? Maybe Daniel Boone?
You, too, can see Snow White and the Seven Dwarves if you visit Rock City! I don't know about Daniel Boone, though.

Round Barn of Arcadia

round barn

My aunt gave me a Round Barn of Arcadia ornament for Christmas, so I thought it would be fun to feature it with a modern round barn postcard on the blog. The barn was built in 1889 and used both to house cattle and host local barn dances and other events. When the interstate overtook the old highway systems, Arcadia, on Route 66, declined. The roof collapsed in 1988. A group of volunteers, led by Luke Robison, decided to preserve the site. Now, the barn houses the Arcadia Historical Society and is available for special functions.

The food exhibits were attractions. Canned, Bottled, and Raw - Aunt Jamima Pancakes 10 cts a plate at their exhibit Scotch scones and German waffles. All the countries showed things for sale. Saw Chinese play today. The bringing together of so many displays is the outstanding Phenomenon.
I love the colors of this postcard and think the message is so interesting! It must have been such fun to visit a world's fair! My grandma, mother, friend Kim, and I went to the World's Fair in New Orleans back in the 1980s, but it wasn't the same.

Endless Caverns

Endless Caverns

Uncirculated
Published by Marken & Bielfeld, ~late 1940s

Endless Caverns is a privately owned tourist attraction near New Market, Virginia. Having opened in the 1920s, the site features underground natural geological formations.

I got this postcard for one reason only, though, and it wasn't Endless Caverns - it was the cute dog sitting so knowingly and proudly in the drive.

I love tacky roadside attractions! Roadside America explains that this I-85 tourist trap was created when Alan Schafer, who opened a beer stand in 1950, received boxes labeled: "Schafer Project: South Of The [North Carolina] Border." For Schafer, the connection was clear, and now, neon Pedro welcomes visitors from all over the east.
