No Trip to Niagara Falls Is Complete

Uncirculated
Published by Curteich (1946)

Postcard caption:
FRONT: Viewing the Grandeur of Niagara Falls from Prospect Point, Niagara Falls, N.Y.
BACK: THE NIAGARA FALLS MUSEUM / No trip to Niagara Falls is complete without a visit to this museum. The museum, situated on the Riverway and facing Prospect Park, is a storehouse of interesting relics and unusual objects, and has several hundred thousand specimens, including Egyptian mummies, Indian relics, and animals.
According to the Niagara Falls Museum website, the museum was forced to move in 1958 to make room for a parking lot. Currently, the museum is in its sixth location, now in Toronto.

I visited Niagara Falls for the first time this week (alas, my trip was not complete without a stop at the museum). The falls are fabulous, and we took a tour on the Maid of the Mist boat. We got soaked, even with our rain gear, but it was refreshing since the day was so hot. We were on the Canadian side, so the vantage point of this photo is slightly different than the view in the postcard.

Your Aunt Fannie Will Mail It

Magnolia Building - Dallas TX

Postcard Caption:
Magnolia Building, Dallas, Texas
Postcard Message:
While waiting on my bus out will drop you a card. I bought you birthday present addressed it and your Aunt Fannie will mail it for me. Write and tell me if you get it. / Love, Mother / Address in care of Ed Gann 2537 / Cleveland Kan City Mo.
The building, designed by architect Sir Alfred Blossom in the early 1920s, originally served as headquarters for Magnolia Petroleum and is now the site of a hotel. The Dallas Architecture website provides this bit of history:
In 1934, Magnolia Petroleum Company erected a large "oil derrick" on the roof that supported two 30 by 50 foot red neon signs that were in the image of Pegasus, the flying red horse, that was the corporate logo for Magnolia. Mobil, as a part of Exxon Mobil Corp. still uses the logo today. The two red horses were located 14 feet apart and revolved when placed on the building. In addition to the sign, the penthouses were illuminated at night. For many years the sign was the highest element within blocks, but by 1974 it had quit revolving. However, the Pegasus sign had become a Dallas icon. In 1977, Mobil moved their headquarters out downtown and the sign and building were given to the City of Dallas. Over the years, the skyscraper had become outdated and in 1997 the sign was turned off.
Here's a different postcard of the Magnolia Building posted by the Dallas Historical Society.

It Has Rained the Biggest Part of the Evening

Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument

Postmarked June 1?, 1939

Indianapolis, Indiana

The Soldier and Sailors Monument was dedicated in 1902. The website for the Colonel Eli Lily Civil War Museum explains:
Recognized as one of the world's outstanding monuments, the structure has come to symbolize both the City of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana. The Limestone used for the monument is gray oolitic limestone from the Romona quarries of Owen County. It stands 284 feet, 6 inches high, only 15 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty. It cost $598,318 in 1902. It has been estimated that building a similar structure today would cost more than five hundred million dollars.
Message:
Dear Folks. Having a grand time. It has rained the biggest part of the evening but nice now. Went to P-- for supper and to the rehearsal. Came back got our bags and checked in at the hotel. Our bags didn't arrive till the next bus. Will write you all about it later. This statue is a block from the hotel. Love, Lillian

Underpass and Church

NC Church and Bypass

Uncirculated

Postcard Caption:
View of Underpass and First Methodist Church, Henderson, N.C.
I am fascinated by this postcard of Henderson's First Methodist Church, which I found at an antique store in Asheville. The church building looks charming with its stained glass windows, but the underpass, despite its comforting symmetry, is such an unpleasant interruption. I wonder if it was a relic of the photograph used to create the postcard or if at the time the underpass seemed more interesting than the church itself.

Dear Gracie am --- for --- say when I awoke this morn I thot I heard a boy yell "You will have to hurry." --found out later he was calling morning paper. Tell E-- hello ---
The Brigham Young Monument at Main Street and South Temple Street in Salt Lake City, Utah stands near the Latter Day Saints' Temple and marks the beginning of the numbered grid for the city's street system. While the addresses were confusing to visitors, when I lived in Salt Lake City in the mid-1990s, I found they made it easy to find places.

Sunday Stamps: Adopted and Adored

I adore stamps that promote adoption of animals from shelters. The Australia postal service published a series of animal stamps in 2010; a full summary is available here.

According to estimates provided by the Humane Society of the United States, 6 to 8 million animals enter U.S. shelters each year. Only half of those animals are adopted. That means the other half, even healthy animals, are euthanized. Please remember to adopt - don't shop - when you are looking for a four-legged friend for your family.
