Bank of Cupid

Bank of Cupid Vintage Postcard - pay 1,000,000 kisses

Postmarked March 1907

Postcard Caption:
[Mar. 29th], 190[7] / BANK OF CUPID / Pay on sight to [Harland G. Hogeboom] [1,000,000] kisses and charge to the account of [A.B. Hogeboom].
Since Harland G. Hogeboom is an unusual name, I thought I might be able to find information about the recipient of this postcard. I wasn't able to find much, but Fulton's The Daily Record announced on June 30, 1934 that Harland and Eleanor L. Glerum received a marriage license. The Webster Herald noted on September 20, 1940 that Mr. and Mrs. Harland Hogeboom spend the day with their mother, Mrs. Lou Hogeboom, who is probably the sender of this postcard. However, there is also mention of a Mr. A.B. Hogeboom, so perhaps the sender is an uncle.

Still Nothing from You

Tyler-Davidson Fountain (Cincinnati, OH)

Postmarked 24 January 1907
Cincinnati, Ohio

Message:
Wed. Jan 23/07/ Arrived here this morning. Still nothing from you. Back here again after Louisville and shall espect [sic] telegraph or letter before end of week. Love from R.
"On October 6, 1871, Henry Probasco presented the fountain to the people of Cincinnati as a memorial to his brother-in-law, Tyler Davidson. Cast by Ferdinand von Muller, Director of the Royal Bronze Foundry of Bavaria, the fountain followed plans drawn by August von Kreling. The 9-foot central figure, the Genius of Water, stands with arms outstretched over groupings of figures representing the uses of water. For its hundredth birthday celebration on October 16, 1971, the Tyler Davidson Fountain was renovated, moved to a new location on Fountain Square Plaza and turned to face west instead of east." I Heard a Boy Yell

Message:
Dear Gracie am --- for --- say when I awoke this morn I thot I heard a boy yell "You will have to hurry." --found out later he was calling morning paper. Tell E-- hello ---
The Brigham Young Monument at Main Street and South Temple Street in Salt Lake City, Utah stands near the Latter Day Saints' Temple and marks the beginning of the numbered grid for the city's street system. While the addresses were confusing to visitors, when I lived in Salt Lake City in the mid-1990s, I found they made it easy to find places.

The Leap Year Proposal

Leap Year

Addressed, No Postmark

In 1904, Dorothy Dix wrote about the benefits - and perils - of taking advantage of the Leap Year tradition that allowed women to propose marriage in the New York Times article "The Leap Year Proposal". Although today, women can freely pop the question, at the turn of the 20th Century, it was against the mores of the day - unless it was February 29th.

Dating: Leap Year occurred in 1908, and since this is an undivided back card, it was probably written that year.
