Toledo, Ohio

POSTCARD CAPTION:
FRONT: Solders' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square. Cleveland, Ohio
BACK: The Public Square is located in the center of the business district. It contains the Soldiers and Sailors' Monument. It is the starting point of all transportation for Northern Ohio. / A splendid fountain, surrounded by walks and beautiful flower beds, occupies the center of each section.
MESSAGE:
Toldeo; O. [or 9?] Aug 19-50 / Dear, Phyllis and Anna. Why don't I hear from you any more. I have been in Columbus O. visiting for two weeks. Wish I would here from you. Do you recognize this card. "Grace."
The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is a Civil War Memorial dedicated on July 4, 1894. According to the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History, architect Levi Scofield donated his services in designing the 125 foot structure. Sadly, earlier this year, researchers discovered that the names of 140 Black soldiers from the local area who fought for the Union were omitted from the memorial. While the names of those veterans have not yet been added, an event to honor members of the U.S. 5th Colored Troop was held this spring. County commissioners responsible for the memorial have pledged to rectify the omissions. (Article)

Terminus of All Transportation Line

Cleveland Terminal Tower (Night)

Uncirculated

Construction on the Terminal Tower ran from 1924 to 1929; it was officially dedicated on June 29, 1930. The souvenir book published in conjunction with the dedication is available online. According to the InterWeb, the last train service was offered in 1977. The area is now known as the Tower City Center, a mixed use complex with office space, shopping, restaurants, a theater, spa, and more. I got excited when I saw a link called "A Greener Way" but was very disappointed to find that for the complex, a greener way is simply recycling.

Electrical Wizardry at the Great Lakes Exposition

Great Lakes Expo

Postmarked 25 August 1937
Cleveland, OH

Message:
Dear Mrs. Page: / How are you? I am home from my sisters, had a lovely time and a real rest. / Sincerely, / Marie Veder
Look at these fabulous colors! They mesmerize me. The description of another postcard of the Expo describes them as one of many "glamorous scenes of electrical wizardry revealed to the thousands visiting the Great Lakes Exposition." According to the online Encyclopedia of Cleveland, the Great Lakes Exposition held two seasons from 1936-1937 to celebrate Cleveland's centennial. Along with the Hall of Progress, Marine Theater, Court of Presidents, and Automobile exhibit, the 135 acre attraction had a midway with rides and sideshows, a "Streets of the World" area with 200 vendors offering food and wares from around the world, an art gallery, and an arboretum. Now, only some gardens remain.
