The Original Texas Steer

POSTCARD: The Original Texas Steer

Postmarked 5 June 1909
Fort Worth, Texas

I am curious about this postcard - why did the sender leave the message blank (though I have seen that done before) and what kind of joke is behind addressing the postcard to the "Prince of Wales"?

I can't find any information on this postcard online, but the image appears in Fort Worth in Vintage Postcards by Quentin McGown (p. 24). Let's pretend this has nothing to do with the Fort Worth Stockyards.

Well, I just had to stop by and say hi to another Aimee on the list!

This postcard is really interesting...The prince of wales in Alabama?? Not something you run across everyday!

Maybe a postcard collector, would love to know what the joke was in the address. Those horns mean business.

The postcard appears to have been really sent by mail to a business/establishment named Prince of Wales in Mobile.
Maybe the message was to STEER away from the fictional Legend of Madoc.
"The Madoc legend survived well into the twentieth century. In 1953, the Daughters of the American Revolution erected a plaque on the shores of Mobile Bay, Alabama "In memory of Prince Madoc, a Welsh explorer who landed… in 1170 and left behind, with the Indians, the Welsh language."[1] This plaque was later removed by the Alabama Parks Department."

Hmmmm...what an interesting postcard! We have a few farmers in our area who raise those kind of cattle--it's always startling to see them glowering at the highway from behind their sturdy fences.

Dorincard's explanation seems VERY interesting...I wonder what the story behind this postcard is?

Happy PFF!
