On July 4, 1776, after the Declaration of Independence was signed, it was read publicly, and the people of Philadelphia celebrated with fireworks, city bells, and bands. A year later, the city repeated the celebration which slowly spread to other towns. The mythical importance of the day was underscored in 1826 when both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died within hours of each other. Congress created Independence Day in 1870; in 1938, it became a paid holiday for federal employees.
