A 1911 publication, "Portland Cement Materials and Industry in the United States" by Edwin Clarence Eckel reported that the Hartshorne plant was under construction. However, the Oklahoma Historical Society reported that the plant never operated successfully.

Hartshorne, in Pittsburgh County, is southeast of Oklahoma City and had a population of 2,125 in 2010. When first incorporated, the Hartshorne Area Chamber of Commerce's history notes that "cows and pigs roamed at will and had the freedom of the village." In 1959, Sallye Phillips-Plunkett was the first African-American to graduate as valedictorian from an integrated high school, a much publicized event at the time.

Had a little rain yesterday. It seems to-day as if winter was over, but I guess in a few days we will think different, don't you. Bertie

The building depicted on the postcard opened in 1926 to great fanfare, but by 1967, the building was so badly deteriorated it was demolished. An inverted pyramid structure took its place in the early 1970s. Currently, the city is in a planning process envisioning the future of the pier, since construction on the pilings must be undertaken by 2014.

The White House

Uncirculated
Published by the Union News Company

POSTCARD CAPTION:
THE WHITE HOUSE has been the home of Presidents from the time of John Adams to the present. Washington selected the site, laid the cornerstone in 1792, and with his wife Martha, inspected the finished building in 1799. The building is of Virginia freestone. After the house has been fired by British Troops in 1814 and only the walls were left standing, the restored exterior was painted white to obliterate the marks of the fire.
President Obama was officially sworn in today in the Blue Room of the White House, a day before the inauguration activities in Washington, D.C.

Amities

Uncirculated

Postcard Message:
Amitiés, Roger Randon
If the interweb is to be trusted, this translates as "Best wishes, Roger Randon."

Finding vintage postcards with yarn or knitting is more challenging than I expected. It's amusing to me that a large percentage of the ones I find also feature cats!
