Trail of Tears

Choctaw Trail of Tears

I received this postcard yesterday from the Choctaw Nation, of which I am a member, to announce the annual Trail of Tears Walk commemorating the destructive and dehumanizing journey of our Choctaw ancestors.

Choctaws were removed from Mississippi to what is now Oklahoma in 1831, 1832, and 1833. With little time to prepare, they had to leave many possessions and animals, not to mention the land itself. The journey was fraught with illness and death in large part due to the poor planning, insufficient ratios and equipment, and cold weather.

The sculpture, The End of the Trail, by James Earle Fraser (displayed at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art) so aptly captures the exhaustion and defeat of the removal.

We Had Tea and Fortune Cookies

Japanese Tea Garden

Postmarked 23 April 19X8 (1948?)
Menlo Park, California

POSTCARD CAPTION:
TEA GARDEN, GOLDEN GATE PARK, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. / THE TEA GARDEN In Golden Gate Park, San Francisco is a delightful spot. Here are hump-back bridges, stone gardens, tiny streams, bamboo trees, temples, cherry blossoms, and azaleas. Many cozy nooks about throughout the gardens.
POSTCARD MESSAGE:
We had tea and fortune cookies in this Tea Garden Weather Lovely There's so many interesting places to go. / Lillian
Isn't it interesting that "Japanese" was excised from the description of this card? I suppose the anti-Japanese sentiment was still too strong after World War II to market the attraction under the name "Japanese Tea Gardens." The garden is still open, and is the oldest Japanese Tea Garden in the United States.

According to the official website, the tea garden was originally built for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition. After the fair closed,
"[Makoto Hagiwara] became caretaker of the property, pouring all of his personal wealth, passion, and creative talents into creating a garden of utmost perfection. Mr. Hagiwara expanded the garden to its current size of approximately 5 acres where he and his family lived for many years until 1942 when they, along with approximately 120,000 Japanese Americans, were forced to evacuate their homes and move into internment camps. When the war was over, the Hagiwara family was not allowed to return to their home at the tea garden."

If the Phone Strike is Off

Gettysburg - Wills House

Postmarked 14, 1952

Postcard Caption:
THE WILLS' HOUSE, PUBLIC SQUARE, GETTYSBURG, PA. was the home of Judge David Wills, who was host to President Abraham Lincoln on November 19th, 1863, and it was here that the President penned his immortal address. The room is now open as a museum.
Postcard Message:
Dear Dad-/ I have been sightseeing today in Gettysburg with Ruth. Tomorrow I'll go to Washington, and Thursday to Stanley's. Saw Kenneth's family on Easter Sunday. / I'll call Sunday P.M. from Chicago IF the phone strike is off. / Lots of love to you, Alice
I am most intrigued about the phone strike; I cannot find much information about it, though I did find a photo of "telephone girls" at a protest meeting in 1952 and a clip from a newspaper that mentioned the strike.

The David Wills House opened in 2009 as a property of the National Park Service.

Pug Pairs

Pug Dogs

This is a mounted black and white photograph. I'm guessing that it was taken in the early 1900s. How do you think my dogs compare? I think my pug mixes look a lot like the pugs of the early Twentieth Century, more than today's full-breed pugs do.

Postcard Message:
Hello, girls. / This is where I am working now It's allright [sic] except that I can't get coffee without walking 8 blocks to the canteen. That's too far for me. I'll settle for cokes. / Fleeta
Tinker Field was established in 1942 during World War II. According to the Tinker Air Force Base History, "Maj. Gen. Clarence L. Tinker, an Oklahoma native and part Osage Indian, lost his life while leading a group of LB-30 bombers on a mission against the Japanese in the region of Wake Island on June 7, 1942. Accordingly, Gen. H.H. "Hap" Arnold ordered the installation named Tinker Field on Oct. 14, 1942." On January 13, it became a permanent installation and was renamed "Tinker Air Force Base." A number of my friends in the University of Oklahoma MBA program were stationed at Tinker.

Warm by Day but Need a Top Coat by Night

Rainbow Pier

Postmarked 8 April 1937
Long Beach, California

Message:
Warm here by day but need a top coat at night. We are 4 blocks from ocean Pacific U.S. fleet (?) in harbor - 16 grant ships! Wish you were here today.
The Interweb indicates the auditorium was built on the beach in 1932. As it was surrounded on three sides by water, the horseshoe (i.e. "rainbow") pier was built to protect it from storms and erosion The pier, a breakwater really, was decorated with multicolored lights and had a roadway on top. The Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center was constructed on the site of the demolished auditorium. A fun then-and-now shot of the Pier is on Jeff Gritchen's blog.

Sad to think that many of those ships were likely destroyed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Perhaps the ships were at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard.

THE GOVERNOR'S PALACE, 1710-1715 / The Palace and its dependencies, preeminent among notable estates in colonial America, have been rebuilt on original foundations. Many of the rooms in the Palace are of special interest because of the collection of antique furniture, paintings, and other furnishings that have been chosen to conform with inventories of royal governors.
