PALOMAR OBSERVATORY The world's largest astronomical observatory has been built by the California Institute of Technology on Palomar Mountain, 69 miles north of San Diego. The observatory will consist of seven buildings, costing over $6,500,000. The outstanding feature of the observatory is the recently installed 200 inch mirror, the largest reflector in the world. The grinding and polishing of this giant glass disc took 11 years and 2 months.

The Palomar Observatory is no longer the largest in the world, but it is still active for research and public presentations.
