Sunday Stamps: Morocco

Saidia

Stamps - Morocco

When I was in my Master's program in the early 2000s, I dated a guy from Morocco. He knew how much I loved postcards, so he asked a friend of his, still in Morocco, to send me some postcards. I think the postmark for these would be April or May 2003.

I can't find a lot about Saidia, but it seems to be a resort town on the sea.

The Lodge | Cloudcroft, New Mexico

The lodge - cloudcraft nm

Uncirculated

Here's a picture of The Lodge today:

The first lodge was built in 1899 but was destroyed by a fire. The current structure was opened on June 1, 1911, and this year, the Lodge hosted a number of Centennial celebrations. I think I'd rather stay when there isn't snow on the ground!

Postcard Dogs

My copy of Postcard Dogs by Libby Hall arrived today. I must admit I am a little jealous of all of these wonderful vintage postcards featuring dogs.

The book includes reproductions of both commercial postcards and real photo postcards (although the latter is more prevalent), and the variety is astounding. Hall found most of these cards at boot and antique stores near her home.

If you like dog postcards, you must have a copy of this book! You'll also love it if you love dogs or are a fan of real photo postcards.

University of Chicago: Hull Gate

Here's a view of Hull Gate on a linen postcard. And here's Hull Gate in the 1990s, when I went to school at the University of Chicago:

University of Chicago: Hull Court Gate

I can't find any history on this gate, but it's so iconic (appeared in When Harry Met Sally) and was something we passed through all the time, the most special time being after graduation when we marched to the quads from Rockefeller Chapel.

USPS on the Brink of Default

Today, The New York Times reports:
The [US Postal Service] is so low on cash that it will not be able to make a $5.5 billion payment due this month and may have to shut down entirely this winter unless Congress takes emergency action to stabilize its finances.
The paper included this graphic to illustrate some of the tensions faced by the USPS.

I'm doing all I can to increase the volume of mail! Join me in this campaign by sending more postcards, preferably to me!
