The Bartholdi Fountain is situated in the center of the Botanical Gardens. It is the work of the French sculptor, Auguste Bartholdi, famed for his Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. This fountain was exhibited and greatly admired at the Philadelphia Centennial in 1876.
Due to its condition, the fountain has not be operated in some time, but restoration is ongoing, according to the U.S. capitol's website. Although Bartholdi set a purchase price at $12,000, Congress paid only $6,000 for it in 1877.

The Powers Building was completed in 1868, and was the first building in upstate New York to have a passenger elevator (then known as a "vertical railroad." Hello Mr. McMillen / Having a wonderful time. The flowers and orange groves are beautiful. Swimming is fine to. / Nancy Niumman / 80 degrees in Eustis, Florida
First off, I love the temperature gauge! Many Europeans who send me postcards through postcrossing include the current temperature; I've taken to doing it too when I send cards overseas. Getting to draw would be more fun! Second, I'm a fan of symmetry, even if it's a little boring.

Postmarked 14 June 1907
Chicago, IL

Message:
FRONT: Most of my work will be done in this building. We have taken a six-room flat at 5612 Jackson Ave.
BACK: I will have a room and Miss Price another. It is a beautiful place and so very convenient for housekeeping for Mrs. Isley. We can't get in until Monday so we are staying at a little hotel nearby. It is cool to-day and I do not feel a bit tired after my hard day. Lovingly, Anna
As you may remember from my August 26, 2010 post, when I went to college at the University of Chicago, the majority of my classes were held in Cobb Hall. I'm very curious what kind of work was being done there in 1907!

Be a Good Girl for Mummy

Atlanta Biltmore

Postmarked 5 February 1954
Atlanta, Georgia

Message:
Hi Bag of Beans: / This is where Daddy is staying while in Atlanta on the convention. Daddy misses you, Sweet. Be a good girl for mummy. Help her all you can. / Love, Daddy
The Atlanta Biltmore opened in 1924 backed in part by Asa Candler from the Coca-Cola family. In an upscale neighborhood, the "apartment hotel" hosted such luminaries as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, and Bette Davis. In the 1960s, however, the Biltmore couldn't survive increased competition from hotels located in downtown Atlanta. Until 1997, it had a series of owners who couldn't make the site work. Now, however, it is home to condos and is available for special functions.

University of Oklahoma: Fine Arts

Vintage Postcard: University of Okahoma

This building was completed in 1918. It was later named Holmberg Hall and then rechristened as the Donald W. Reynolds Performing Arts Center. The University of Oklahoma says this about the building:
Reynolds Performing Arts Center was created through an $18 million project that renovated and restored OU’s historic Holmberg Hall and added a new stage house and a 20000-square-foot facility for OU’s School of Dance. The project was made possible with a $12.2 million grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation of Las Vegas. Holmberg Hall which features a beautifully restored 685-seat performance hall was built in 1918 and named for Fredrik Holmberg the University’s first Fine Arts Dean. Other special features of the building include three historic murals in the performance hall lobby by acclaimed muralist Mike Larsen; three more Mike Larsen murals in the School of Dance lobby titled Movement in Violet Entranced (honoring School of Dance Founders Miguel Terekhov and Yvonne Chouteau) and Waiting in the Wings.
